Oh, a storm is threat’ning
My very life today
If I don’t get some shelter
Oh yeah, I’m gonna fade away
–The Rolling Stones, “Gimme Shelter.”
It’s hard for me to just brush this election aside and go back to business as usual. Everybody’s talking about it. Writing about it. Blaming about it.
Since I wrote this post, I’ve imagined all kinds of scenarios with the guy who won’t shut up about politics and wants to make me part of his captive audience while gaming.
“Okay, you come back to the table once you’ve read the U.S. Constitution, followed by Chapter 8 in The Republic, by Plato.”
“The room with the people who care is down the hall and its empty, you’re in the wrong room.”
“Dude, can I just please get just a couple more games in without interruption before Second American Civil War begins?”
I hope it doesn’t come to that.
Right now there’s been protests in downtown Atlanta and across the country. There’s a haze in the sky–smoke from wildfires. It even smells faintly of burnt leaves.
If gaming is really about escapism, then now its really time for game masters to step up their game. Provide that temporary relief from “the real world.” Unplug from all the social media for an afternoon or an evening.
Make it a great time for your players.
Give them some shelter.
