The following are principles to be observed by an invading force: the further you penetrate into a country, the greater will be the solidarity of your troops, and thus the defenders will not prevail against you.
Make forays into fertile country in order to supply your army with food.
Carefully study the well-being of your men, and do not overtax them. Concentrate your energy and hoard your strength. Keep your army continually on the move, and devise unfathomable plans.

It should go without saying that the more one wargames the better one gets.
There’s a big difference between somebody who games once a week and somebody once every other week.
The Bearded Bastard wargamed at least once a week. He was always a presence among our gathering of wargamers.
We gamed in places where food could be bought, or the at very least, vending machines were available.
When you game regularly you get to know the strengths and weakness of you army… and yourself. You learn to eat before a long session, or to bring snacks for that late afternoon slump before dinner. You come to know the perfect offensive and defensive combinations of your units.
You learn tactics and strategies your opponent hasn’t formulated himself because he hasn’t played as often as you.
Yet there is a certain limit to your endurance even though you, yourself, aren’t physically marching across the field, wargaming can be tiring.
There can be, indeed, too much of a good thing.
